Francesco Beccuti visited Stockholm University as a guest PhD student right at the outbreak of Covid-19. Nothing went as planned, and already a few days after his arrival, he had to go back home to Turin in Italy. Despite this, the collaboration with Francesco and his main supervisor continued as if nothing had happened. He participated in several PhD courses on-line. And now, four years later, he is a permanent member of the research group SOCAME.

– This is a great example of what we gain out of cultivating our international contacts, says Paola Valero, who has been Francesco’s co-supervisor. At the end of 2022, he defended his dissertation work “The subject of mathematics”, for which he received a degree with honors. Francesco’s recent article "Stories of devoted university students: the mathematical experience as a form of ascesis" has had great significance for both our work in the SOCAME group and within the IMMPACT project. We are so glad he is part of the group!
