Diplomacy as a Gendered International Institution
The academic interest in gender and diplomacy has grown dramatically in the past decade, in the field of international history as well as in international relations. However, not only is diplomacy a multi-faceted set of relations and practices, but gender is complex, malleable, and multidimensional. Existing scholarship has thus tended to focus on single Ministries of Foreign Affairs or single multilateral sites, combined with a study of one gender dimension or another. In an ongoing book project on gender in bilateral diplomacy, I try to capture the international, multi-sited and multidimensional character of gender and diplomacy. During the seminar, I will briefly discuss my theoretical conception, to then focus most of the talk on presenting findings from several empirical studies on the many ways in which bilateral diplomacy is gendered (including divisions of labor, professional identities and practices, diplomatic networks, and more). These findings will also be discussed in the context of how gender and diplomacy have changed historically.
Diplomati som en könsbestämd internationell institution
Det akademiska intresset för genus och diplomati har vuxit snabbt under det senaste decenniet inom såväl internationell historia som internationella relationer. Diplomati består av en mångfacetterad uppsättning relationer och praktiker och genus består av en komplex, formbar och mångdimensionell dimension. Den befintliga forskningen har endast fokuserat på enskilda utrikesministerier eller enskilda multilaterala arenor och endast några få studier har applicerat en genusdimension. I ett pågående bokprojekt om genus i bilateral diplomati försöker jag fånga den internationella, mångsidiga och mångdimensionella karaktären av genus och diplomati. Under seminariet kommer jag i korthet diskutera mina teoretiska utgångspunkter för att sedan presentera mina empiriska resultat från studier med fokus på olika sätt som bilateral diplomati är könsbestämd på (arbetsfördelning, yrkesidentitet och praktiker, diplomatiska nätverk, etcetera). Dessa resultat kommer även att diskuteras i relation till hur genus och diplomati har förändrats historiskt.
