New research, funded by the Swedish research council and the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW), has revealed for the first time a large fully intact component of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) biosynthesis machinery in Gram-negative bacteria. This new structure from the model organism E. coli provides a structural context to over a decade’s worth of previous biochemical studies and creates new possibilities in the development of novel therapies to combat the growing global problem of infections due to antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The study is published in the scientific journal Nature Communications.
