Albano – a unique environment for education and research

Just a stone’s throw from the city and close to Stockholm University and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, is the new campus of Albano. The entire campus, with room for 15,000 students and researchers, was inaugurated in October 2023.

The building of the new, sustainable Albano campus started in 2015 with a planned 70,000 square metres of floor space and housing for 1,000 students and researchers. The ambition with the new campus is to bring together related university activities in close proximity to both Stockholm University and KTH. The area lies between Roslag’s train station and Roslagsvägen, just east of the Kräftriket campus, within the national park area.

Albano will be an attractive education and research environment that connects the universities with each other and with the city. It will also strengthen Stockholm as a city of knowledge.

“Albano will be a place for research and higher education with great potential for meetings and collaborations that extend beyond institutional borders”, says Astrid Söderbergh Widding, President of Stockholm University.

Albano is built with long-term consideration for the environment and a focus on sustainable urban development. A research group from Stockholm Resilience Centre and KTH’s School of Architecture have contributed their knowledge and ideas to the planning process, grounded in socio-ecological urban design.

Albano embodies a commitment to sustainability at every level, from the choice of materials and the design of the teaching environment to energy conservation through solar panels on the roof and the geothermal well under the buildings. The well, which is about 350 metres deep, generates heat, cooling and warm water for the buildings. The campus also uses a new water system that manages run-off, improves the microclimate and the outdoor areas which are designed to improve habitats for plants and animals.

The first groups will move in during autumn 2020, and the entire area, with space for 15,000 students and researchers, is planned for completion in 2023.
