Stockholm University has a broad collaboration with the society. Collaboration contributes to developing research.

Collaboration also contributes to link people from different areas and with different knowledge. Researchers collaborate with schools, companies, authorities and organizations, are experts in the media and participate in the public debate.

Stockholm University collaborates broadly with the business sector. We work with both large and small actors across a range of fields, with the aim of creating mutual benefit through knowledge exchange, innovation, and societal development.

Partnerships take place within both research and education, and include everything from joint research projects to skills development and student engagement initiatives.

  • Joint research projects: We conduct research in close dialogue with businesses to develop new solutions to real-world problems.
  • Companies as co-creators in education: Industry professionals contribute to teaching, guest lectures, and course design.
  • Contract education and professional development: We offer tailored education and training for professionals across various industries.
  • Student engagement in business: Through internships, thesis work, and case studies, our students become involved in the everyday operations and challenges of companies.
  • Innovation support and commercialization: The Innovation Office at Stockholm University supports researchers in developing and realizing ideas with commercial potential. The office also collaborates with Drivhuset, which helps students take their ideas further.

University support for innovation and business ideas

Stockholm University engages with companies and organisations across many different sectors, including the pharmaceutical industry, IT and technology. Engagement often takes place at departmental level and may involve joint research projects, guest lectures, student projects, or the development of new methods and technologies.

In some projects, researchers work together with companies to develop more sustainable chemical processes or new digital solutions, while students have the opportunity to participate through degree projects and internships.

Engagement between Stockholm University and Region Stockholm

Region Stockholm and Stockholm University have a collaboration agreement covering areas with a particular need for research efforts. The aim is, among other things, to contribute knowledge to help address societal challenges.

Engagement between Stockholm University and the City of Stockholm

The engagement between Stockholm University and City of Stockholm is primarily focused on climate and the environment, as well as social sustainability. The aim is to strengthen and systematise the many forms of engagement that already exist in various areas, and to improve the conditions for future engagement.

The agreement has led to several projects, for example in the field of social sustainability. In this area, the education in social work engages with the Social Services to integrate theory and practice at an early stage of the training. This in turn strengthens the connection to working life and improves the working environment in the city’s social institutions.

Events and workshops

Stockholm University regularly organises workshops and other events in engagement with City of Stockholm, with the aim of fostering dialogue, developing project ideas and identifying shared societal challenges.

One example is a joint workshop series linked to calls within the EU programme Horizon Europe, where researchers and municipal officials meet to explore opportunities for engagement. These initiatives promote needs-driven knowledge development and open new pathways for sustainable societal development.

These forums provide a platform for researchers and city officials to connect, exchange perspectives and develop ideas for future engagement.

Cultural sector

As Stockholm’s most influential university in the fields of humanities and social sciences, we have research and education collaborations with a large number of museums, theatres and other cultural institutions in the capital.

Dramaten and Stockholm University have a long-term partnership within research and education which enables them in various ways to profit from each other’s competences. 

One example is STAGES – Sustainable Theatre Alliance for a Green Environmental Shift – is a European cooperation project in which participating theatres carry out various development initiatives in collaboration with researchers, universities, and audiences to promote more sustainable practices.

Since 2018, Dramaten and Stockholm University have had a formal engagement agreement. Research, education, and innovation from Stockholm University contribute to the development of Dramaten’s operations in line with the Swedish government’s sustainability goals.

Natasja Börjeson is one of the researchers from Stockholm University who has worked to find innovative solutions that reduce environmental impact without limiting creativity at Dramaten.

Since 2020, Stockholm University has had a engagement agreement with Kulturhuset Stadsteatern (KHST). The collaboration takes place on multiple levels and involves a range of departments across the university.

Thematic focus divided into five areas:

  • Digitalisation
  • Climate and sustainability
  • Communication and audiences
  • The arts: performing arts, film, literature, and music
  • Urban societal development

Joint activities

Kulturhuset Stadsteatern’s various branches at Sergels torg, Skärholmen, and Vällingby-Husby collaborate with departments from all academic areas at Stockholm University. Activities include joint research projects on migration and cultural urban development, course collaborations in sustainability and cultural production, as well as internships, guest lectures, and public events.

Stockholm University and Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) work together closely on issues and research regarding development and the environment.

University Alliance Stockholm Trio

The University Alliance Stockholm Trio is a partnership between Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Stockholm University. Stockholm Trio strengthens collaboration, promotes interdisciplinary research and education, and supports joint action regionally, nationally, and internationally.
