The research focus at Tarfala Research Station is broad, encompassing glaciology, climatology, permafrost, biodiversity, hydrology, meteorology, and more. For example, in glaciology, the station is responsible for mass balance measurements on Sweden’s four reference glaciers. In 2024, all four glaciers experienced the largest melt since measurements began. To address these rapid changes, new measurement methods must be implemented, and pilot projects using advanced technology, sensors, and instruments are underway but urgently need scaling up and expansion.
As the glaciers shrink, they reveal new terrain where vegetation begins to establish itself, offering unique opportunities to study emerging ecosystems where plants, water, permafrost, and other factors interact dynamically.
