FAQ for those renting university housing with respect to COVID-19

Stockholm University rent out hundreds of residences to international students and researchers. Due to the current situation with covid-19 we have received questions about the rental agreements. For example, what applies at a suddenly cancelled travel? Following are answers to the most frequently asked questions.

  • A student or researcher from another country who has been booked for one of the university’s residences, but who cannot come to Sweden due to travel restrictions (imposed by the Swedish government) does not have to pay any cancellation fee or consider the notice period normally required.
  • A student from another country who has been booked for one of the university’s residences, but who cannot come to Sweden because scholarship or study grant is withdrawn due to decision for distance learning at the department in question, does not have to pay any cancellation fee or consider the notice period normally required. However, written proof is required confirming that a scholarship or study grant has been withdrawn for this reason
  • A student or researcher from another country who has been booked for one of the university's residences, but who cannot come to Sweden due to the fact that a negative covid-19 test or vaccine certificate cannot be presented. In this case normally three months' notice of the residency applies. 
  • If a student or researcher from another country resided in one of the university’s residences, but at his or her own decision discontinued the studies or employment, then a notice period of three months normally applies.
  • If a student or researcher from another country resided in one of the university’s residences, but was revoked by his or her home country or university, then a notice period of three months normally applies. Stockholm University holds the position that compensation for this cost ought to be applied for via the home university or insurance company.

If a student or researcher in one of the university's shared accommodation is suspected/determined to be infected with covid-19, this person can be moved to an isolated accommodation in a separate apartment (that is reserved for this purpose).
