How Stockholm University is governed
Stockholm University is a public agency which is governed by laws, rules, and decisions made by the government and representatives. The university board is the highest level decision making body and the President is the agency’s head.
The vice president is next in line after the president and executes the president’s duties when s/he is not available. The university leadership consists of president, vice president, three deputy vice presidents, university director and deputy university director.
Education and research at Stockholm University are divided into two subject areas: the human science and the science. Each area is governed by a board, headed by a deputy vice president. The board for human sciences has three faculties under it: the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Law. These are governed by faculty boards each led by a dean. The natural sciences area and the Faculty of Science are one in the same and have their own faculty board.

Education and research are conducted at Stockholm University within 51 departments, centres and institutes which answer directly to the boards of human science and science, or the faculty boards.
University administration
The University Administration is a preparation and service body for the University Board, the President and other decision making bodies. The University Administration is led by the University Director. Within the University Administration there are 11 administrative offices.
Acedemic areas and faculties
Education and research at Stockholm University is divided into two academic areas: Human Science and Science. Each area is governed by an area board chaired by the Deputy Vice President.
The area board for Human Science embraces three faculties:
• Faculty of Humanities
• Faculty of Law
• Faculty of Social Sciences
These are governed by their respective faculty boards, which are chaired by a dean.
The Science academic area is represented by one single faculty – the Faculty of Science. Therefore, the area board also works as the faculty board.
