Detailed information for participants

Professors who have taken office during the period from 1 July previous year until 30 June current year, will, according to academic tradition, be installed in office by the President. You will be invited with one guest to attend the ceremony and the banquet.

During the ceremony, the professors who applied for and received an advertised position or were promoted will be installed. (Professors are only installed once at Stockholm University.) New visiting, affiliated and adjunct professors will not be installed but are be mentioned in the printed programme, except if it is a prolongation of the position.

Professors participating in the ceremony will receive a diploma from the President.

Those doctors who have defended their doctoral thesis and received their formal degree certificate (promovendi) during the period from 1 July previous year until 30 June current yearwill be, according to academic tradition, conferred their doctoral degree.

An invitation for you and one guest, for both the ceremony and the banquet, will be sent to the address registered in Ladok. If you have changed addresses recently, please send your new email address to the Master of Ceremonies. Email: doktorspromotion@su.se.

The International Student Office is responsible for issuing the degree. If you have questions about your degree please contact their office. Email: examen@su.se.

Supervisors

One supervisor per invited promovendi will receive a personal invitation for the ceremony and banquet, but only if their particular doctoral student is attending the conferment ceremony. For this reason it is important that the new doctor registers for the ceremony as soon as possible.

The doctoral hat and other insignia

During the conferment ceremony different insignia, symbols of the newly aquired dignity of the conferred, will be presented.

The doctoral hat

The doctoral hat is a symbol of freedom and power and is handed out to new doctors at the Faculty of Law during the ceremony.

If you hold a Doctor of Laws degree and intend to participate in the conferment ceremony, you must order your doctoral hat yourself from our supplier, Hattsmedjan. Instructions on how to place your order will be sent separately by the Master of Ceremonies. All doctoral hats are handmade, following traditional craftsmanship from start to finish. To ensure that your hat is delivered in time for the ceremony, it must therefore be ordered well in advance. Orders for this year’s ceremony must be placed no later than the final registration date for the event.

Hats for Honorary Doctors of Law are ordered by the Master of Ceremonies. Jubilee Doctors of Law bring their own hat.

The wreath of laurel

The wreath of laurel is also a symbol of academic freedom and is awarded to new doctors at one of the other faculties, the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Science.

The laurel wreaths are ordered by the Master of Ceremonies. You must therefore indicate your headsize, ie. the head circumference in centimeters, when registering, so that the wreath will be made in the right size.

If you have been conferred with a laurel wreath you can, after the ceremony and at your own expense, buy a doctoral hat.

The doctoral ring

The doctoral ring symbolizes the allegiance to science and is awarded only to the honorary doctorates. These are ordered by the Master of Ceremonies. After the conferment ceremony you can, at your own expense, buy a doctoral ring. The doctoral ring is usually worn on the left hand ring finger.

The doctoral diploma

The doctoral diploma is awarded to all the new doctors as the written proof of the conferment. It should not be confused with the formal degree certificate.

The conferment is voluntary and has no legal significance.

The doctoral hat is a symbol of freedom and power and is given to honorary doctors at the Faculty of Law during the ceremony.

All doctoral hats are manufactured by hand and are a traditional needlework from beginning to end and must be ordered well in advance for them to be delivered in time for the ceremony. The hats are ordered by the Master of Ceremonies. To achieve a perfect fit, we ask you to have your head measurement taken with a conformateur.

50 years after a doctoral conferment ceremony, the attending doctors are invited back to their university to be conferred jubilee doctors. They are invited with one guest to both the ceremony and the banquet.

Jubilee doctors can be conferred both present and in their absence.

Stockholm University invites recipients of the University Gold Medal and the Award for Good Teaching to receive their awards at the Inauguration and Conferment ceremony. They will be invited with one guest to both the ceremony and the banquet.

Medals

Rehearsal the same day

In order for the ceremony to run as smooth as possible and become a fine memory, a compulsory rehearsal takes place in the Blue Hall in the City Hall at 3 p.m. the same day as the ceremony. Formal dress is not required at the rehearsal.

Guests

In addition to accompanying guests to the ceremony and the following banquet, other guests are welcome to attend only the ceremony in the City Hall. The number of additional guests allowed is stated in the invitation.

Dress Code

Formal dress is required at the conferment ceremony and the banquet. This means either white tie and tails with a white vest or an evening gown. Orders/medallions may be worn. An alternative may be to wear a national costume.

There are no dress requirements for guests who will only attend the ceremony, but smart casual is appreciated.
