Important dates

  • You can nominate until 1 March 2026.
  • The nomination period runs from December to March each year.
  • The award recipients are announced in June.

Awarding takes place in connection with the Inauguration of new professors and conferment of doctoral degrees

Every year since 1992, Stockholm University has awarded talented teachers a prize of SEK 50,000 and a diploma that is formally handed over at the annual promotions and installation ceremony at the City Hall. The award is to be used to enable the teacher to carry on developing his or her professional competence.

All students and staff at Stockholm University may nominate a teacher to The Award for Good Teaching. The nominee must teach at the university's education and be permanently employed at Stockholm University. A teacher can normally only be awarded the prize once.

The Criterion for the selection of The Award for Good Teaching

The award goes to teachers who meet the criterion that they support student learning through:

  • Outstanding teaching efforts
  • Acknowledged interest in, and commitment to, educational development of teaching
  • Acknowledged pedagogical competence.

You should focus on this criterion when you nominate a teacher. Try to describe in your own words why you think your teacher meets the criterion and deserves the award. Bear in mind that nominations which are too short will not get past the first step in the selection procedure. The preferred amount of text is approximately 100 to 500 words per question. There is plenty of space for your text in the boxes in the nomination form. Just "scroll" down!

The award is administered by Centre for the Advancement of University Teaching (CeUL).

The entire selection process is kept a secret from the nominees since the award is meant to be a surprise for the award-recipients. To ensure a fair assessment of the nominated teachers, the nominations are anonymized during the selection process.

The selection process consists of the following steps:

  • The nominations are assessed by working group consisting of experienced higher education experts and representatives from the Stockholm University Student Union. The working group drafts a shortlist consisting of 10 candidates among the nominees.
  • Next, the department where the shortlisted candidate works is informed of their nomination and sent information. The name(s) of whom wrote the nomination is not included. Each department, together with student representatives, writes a motivation letter which elaborates upon the department's and the students' perspective of candidate based on the criteria of the award.
  • CeUL's Board of Directors discusses the working group’s shortlist along with the supplementary motivation letters from the departments and then the nominees are ranked. The final ranking is then submitted to the university vice presidents and president.
  • In June, the university president, in consultation with the vice-presidents, decides upon on a final selection of 1-5 award recipients. The awardees are then announced on this website.
