Additional Research Funders

Here you will find additional external research funders which support Stockholm University. Regardless of size, all contributions to research are extremely important for the specific projects they support.

The Swedish Cancer Society

The Swedish Cancer Society is an independent, non-profit fundraising organisation that finances cancer research through donations. In 2024, the Swedish Cancer Society awarded SEK 27 million in grants to nine research projects at Stockholm University.

The Swedish Energy Agency

One of the projects co-funded by the Swedish Energy Agency is the collaboration between researchers at the Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry, Höganäs AB, Nilar AB and Scania CV AB, focusing on rechargeable NiMH batteries.
Support from the Swedish Energy Agency to researchers from the same department also includes Joseph Samec, “Aviation Fuel from Lignin”, and Lennart Bergström, “Thermal Conductivity and Phonon Transport in Bio-based Nanocomposites”.

Handelsbanken Research Foundations

The two foundations within the Handelsbanken Research Foundations are the Jan Wallander and Tom Hedelius Foundation and the Tore Browaldh Foundation. Since their establishment in 1961, the Handelsbanken Research Foundations have supported social science research, focusing on economics, economic theory, business administration and economic history. Year after year, researchers and research groups at Swedish universities are funded – often with the aim of enabling independent, long-term and socially beneficial research.

Mistra

Mistra is an independent research foundation which supports the development of strong research in the environmental field, with the aim of creating good living conditions for all.
Mistra is an active research funder that monitors its initiatives to ensure they deliver societal benefits in the form of a healthy environment, and that different stakeholders develop new products, services and working methods to meet environmental challenges.

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency funds research that reflects societal challenges in the areas of environment and wildlife. Its work is based on the best available knowledge, and research results form an important basis for advancing environmental efforts. Its research calls reflect societal challenges in the environmental field and are closely linked to the Agency’s mandate and areas of responsibility.

The Nordic Council of Ministers

The Nordic Council of Ministers is the official body for intergovernmental cooperation between the Nordic countries. It works towards joint Nordic solutions in areas where better results can be achieved through collaboration than by addressing issues individually. One example of its contributions is support for cooperation in the internationalisation of higher education.

Olle Engkvist Foundation

The Foundation’s main purpose is to promote scientific research and the care for elderly people in need, the ill or the disabled, as well as the care or upbringing of children. In 2025, the Foundation awarded grants of SEK 4.2 million to the Department of History, enabling a major initiative in urban history.

Region Stockholm

Stockholm University has a central engagement agreement with Region Stockholm. It seeks to address, among other things, some of the societal challenges within the areas of life science, mental health, digitalisation, climate and urban planning, as well as culture.

The Swedish National Space Agency

The Swedish National Space Agency is a central government authority under the Ministry of Education and Research, responsible for state-funded national and international activities relating to space research and development in Sweden. The Agency funds research projects at Stockholm University, for example in astronomy and satellite projects. Stockholm University also hosts the Agency for lectures and other events. The University conducts research and education related to space that can benefit from the Agency’s expertise and international networks, for example in space safety and the use of data from, for instance, the James Webb Space Telescope.

Sida – Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency

Sweden’s government agency for development cooperation, Sida, works to reduce poverty and oppression around the world and invests, together with organisations, authorities and companies, in sustainable development for all people.

Vinnova

Vinnova’s mission is to strengthen Sweden’s innovation capacity to contribute to sustainable growth. Through its support, companies and organisations are given the opportunity to experiment with and test new ideas before they become profitable. Each year, Vinnova invests approximately SEK 3.5 billion in research and innovation.
