Poverty not only a matter of material deprivation

– In rich countries such as Sweden, researchers tend to perceive poverty in a different light. We look at the standard of living. What resources do people need to be able to participate in society on the same terms as others? What resources does one need to be able to shape and steer life in the direction that they want? It does not necessarily have to be economical resources. It can be knowledge, to feel safe and secure or to have psychological or physical capacity, says Carina Mood, Professor of Sociology at Stockholm University, who conducts research on poverty, inequality, and integration.
