Accommodation for visiting researchers and doctoral students

University accommodation is in high demand and an offer cannot be guaranteed. We recommend applying as early as possible and looking for other housing in Stockholm at the same time.

Who can apply

You are eligible to apply if all of the following apply:

• You are an international visiting researcher or doctoral student.
• You are affiliated with a department at Stockholm University.
• Your stay is at least three months.
• You are conducting research at 50 per cent of full time or more.

Choose university accommodation

There are four categories of accommodation for visiting researchers and doctoral students. Each category includes one or more accommodation areas that you can select when you apply.

All accommodation is furnished. Rent includes heating, hot and cold water, broadband and electricity.

Some accommodation areas appear in more than one category because they offer different types of housing. To increase your chances of receiving the type of accommodation you prefer, select all available areas within the categories that suit you.

Shared accommodation near campus

Your own lockable bedroom in shared accommodation near campus. You share spaces such as the kitchen, lounge and, in some properties, bathroom with other residents.

Rent up to SEK 9,950.

Studios and one-bedroom apartments near campus

Private, self-contained studios and one-bedroom apartments for single households and couples. You have your own kitchen and bathroom and more privacy than in shared accommodation.

Family apartments near campus

One- and two-bedroom apartments for couples and families who need more space. Several options have separate bedrooms suitable for families with children.

Premium apartments in the city centre

Spacious and well-equipped apartments in central Stockholm, close to public transport, shops, restaurants and other city amenities.

At Sergelhuset, rents are up to SEK 17,850. A small number of larger family apartments in the city centre may also be available.

How to apply

Fill in the application form and include

• your personal details
• at least five accommodation preferences
• a valid photo ID
• a signed certificate for accommodation.

Your application will be placed in the housing queue once all required documents have been submitted. Accommodation is offered based on availability.

Staying with your spouse or family

You are welcome to stay with your spouse or family in any accommodation that is not marked as shared in the preference selection list.

Remember to include information about your spouse or family members in your application.

Waiting time for a housing offer

Waiting times vary. Based on previous application periods, it usually takes 2–6 months from submitting your application to receiving an offer.

Waiting times depend on factors such as accommodation area, rent level and time of year. Your chances are generally higher if you plan to move in during April–July or at the end of the year. Occasionally, accommodation also becomes available at short notice.
