History of the cottage

Finnstugan was built in 1925 to designs by architect Erik Fant. It replaced an older cottage which burnt down after a lightning strike. Finnstugan was first used as stables, but in 1898 it become a dwelling for gardeners in the Bergius Botanic Garden. In 1945, the building was extended with a new wing designed by engineer Herbert Olsson. The older building section is characterized by the prim and elegant classicist ideal of the 1920s, while the newer wing gives a rougher, heavier impression. Today, Finnstugan is a state-owned listed building and its preservation is considered important in view of the cultural history of the Bergius Botanic Garden. It is part of Sweden’s heritage and is managed by the National Property Board.
