History/about

The cottage is one of two buildings called Svarta villorna (the Black Villas). They were built as residential houses for the caretakers of The National Museum of Natural History in 1914. The other museum houses were built of brick, but the caretakers’ houses are made of wood. The architect Axel Anderberg designs are typical of the times villas in exclusive residential areas, but the insides were much simpler. In each villa there were four 2-room apartments, with kitchen and WC for the caretakers and their families. The laundry and bathing had to be carried out in the Portvaktshuset (Gate-keepers house), located about 300 meters south of the villas.

The villas were initially heated with traditional Swedish tile stoves and the food was cooked on wood burning stoves. Each apartment had its own food and wood cellar. In front of the villas were the kitchen gardens. Potatoes, vegetables and fruit were grown there - the old fruit trees are from that time. Even today, the villas are used by the Swedish Museum of Natural History. A couple of apartments are rented out to guest researchers, other apartments are used as workplaces for the museum's researchers. (Källa: Riksantikvarieämbetet).
