Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2014-2015 was presented on October 1 and is topped by California Institute of Technology and Harvard University in the USA. On third position is University of Oxford in the UK. American and British universities dominate like in previous years in the top of the ranking. But this year's ranking also shows that Asian university receives a stronger position. Now there are 24 Asian universities among the world's top 200, compared to 20 in last year's ranking.

Three Swedish universities among world's top 100

This year's ranking means that three Swedish universities are ranked among the world's top 100 by THE. Karolinska institutet is found on position 44 (compared to 36 last year). Stockholm University goes forward and is in on shared position 98 (103) with Uppsala University (111) and München Technical University. For Stockholm University, this result continue the strong positive trend in the THE ranking, from position 261 in the year 2006.

The Swedish universities following are Lund University at 119, KTH 126 and University of Gothenburg (in the range of 226-250).

Citations and survey responses are most important

Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings is published by THE together with Thomson Reuters. The THE ranking for 2014-2015 is based on 13 indicators in five categories. The main indicators are a citation indicator and the two survey indicators and together they account for nearly 2/3 of the total weight. The weighting is research oriented and bibliometric indicators account for more than 1/3 of the total weight.

As for the various categories, Stockholm University receives the highest score, 90.1, in the Citations category (with the weight 30 percent), which is slightly higher than last year's score. Stockholm University has received a higher score in 4 out of 5 categories compared to last year.

THE publish rankings in six wide fields, with 100 higher education institutions in each field. Stockholm University is ranked in the same three fields in the top 100 last year. In "Physical Sciences", Stockholm University holds position 53 (first of Swedish universities), in "Arts and Humanities" position 83 (second in Sweden) and in "Life Sciences" 71 (third in Sweden).
