This year’s placement means that Stockholm University consolidates its position on the list with the top 100 universities in the world.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), better known as Shanghai Ranking, is done at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and is often listed as one of the three most prestigious university rankings in the world, along with QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The Shanghai Ranking measures the quality of research, including indicators such as the number of alumni and employed researchers who have won Nobel Prizes, the number of “highly quoted” researchers and the number of articles published in the journals Nature and Science. In 2016, Stockholm University was placed as the 81th best university in the world.

This year’s list is, as in previous years, topped by the American universities Harvard and Stanford, followed by British University of Cambridge in third place. Karolinska Institutet is ranked primarily among Swedish universities, at place 44.
