SASUF Forum
Stockholm University took part in a research- and innovation week in may in South Africa, within the framework of the project South African Sweden Forum (SASUF).

In connection with the possibility to nominate researchers to the event in Stellenbosch 2019 and also being a partner of the project, Stockholm University joined the SASUF in September 2018. The project is funded by STINT and the universities involved and is being held 2017-2020 with a closing research seminar in Uppsala on May 4-8, 2020. Thanks to 36 South African and Swedish universities as co-organisers, and additional financial partners as Swedish Research Council, FORTE and STINT present, close to 50 satellite events were arranged all around South Africa prior to the main seminar in Stellenbosch. The satellite events attracted around 1,000 participants all over the country. 450 people attended the main seminar which dealt with six different themes with a clear link to Agenda 2030. The thematic areas were Climate Research, Education, Social Change, Health, Urbanisation, and Digital technology. From Stockholm University 10 researchers participated with a focus on climate change, education and computer science.

In parallel with the research seminars a leadership summit was held in order to bring forth a joint declaration on higher education. Stockholm University was represented by Vice President Clas Hättestrand and Head of International Affairs Maria Wikse. The declaration which calls upon continued commitment to higher education was signed by some 20 universities and will be presented to the Department of Education in South Africa and Sweden. A number of students’ unions from the two countries took part in the meeting with the university delegates and were given the opportunity to influence the wording of the declaration.
