The list is published by the analytics agency Clarivate Analytics. The researchers performance is measured by production of multiple highly cited papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and year in Web of Science.

In the list, more than 4000 Highly Cited Researchers (HCRs) are named in 21 fields of the sciences and social sciences. New for 2018 is that approximately 2000 additional researchers also have been identified for their exceptional performance in cross-cutting fields.
