This event is organzied as a workshop within the SU – Cambridge U collaboration run by Jaqueline Berndt and Laura Moretti, 2020–2023. It approaches the collaboration project on “Invitations to Playful Reading: towards a New Paradigm for the Study of Graphic Fiction from Early Modern to Contemporary Japan” through the lens of early modern Japan. Laura Moretti, author of Pleasure in Profit: Popular Prose in Seventeenth-Century Japan (Columbia University Press, 2020), will deliver a paper of max. 45 min., which will then be followed by a reflection on how to engage with popular printed pictorializations of poetry from the perspectives of performativity and transmedial storytelling, held by Ewa Machotka. This is meant as a first stept to explore possibilities of research collaboration within the Department, especially among specialists of East Asian literatures.
