Question:

My name is Garun, having a Bachelor of Technology degree in Information Technology. I have 10 years of working experience in IT industry ,I worked in  multiple countries and currently working in Stockholm, and want to participate in One-year Master's Programme in Computer and Systems Sciences, 60 credits . I completed my Bachelor of Technology degree (4 years)  from a reputed university in India and medium of instructions was in English. I appeared in IELTS(general) 2013 and scored overall 6.5.  For Language proficiency, Can I get exception for not appearing in IELTS or TOEFL ?

Answer:

I have consulted with Student Services regarding your question, and a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology will unfortunately not meet the English requirement. It is unlikely that an exemption can be grated in this case, based on your description of your educational background. The best solution in this case is to do one of the accepted international tests https://www.universityadmissions.se/en/All-you-need-to-know1/Applying-for-studies/English-requirements/Internationally-recognized-English-test/ and submit the results by 1 February.

Question:

Hello how are you? It is a great pleasure to write to you. I am from the Gambia and I have applied for Computer and system science at Stockholm University. I am a BSc major in Information Systems with 3.506GPA. I have rank Stockholm as my first priority and Uppsala second but am still hopeless about my chances in Stockholm university because for Uppsala University I applied for MSc in Information systems.  secondly, how is the living expenses like in Stockholm as a student...is it expensive and is the accommodation expensive as a student will it be possible to get a part-time job or internship whiles studying?

Answer:

Based on my experience, I would say the GPA is pretty good, so, never loose hope :).  Stockholm as a city is bit expensive. However it is more based on your life style, how much your spend eating out and visiting expensive places. The necessities like transport is not so expensive. Moreover, there are some student discounts that students with studentkortet (Student Card) can avail.

Accommodation

The major challenge in Stockholm is to find accommodation. As far as cost of accommodation is concerned, if you are lucky to get into a student accommodation it will be around 3000-5000 SEK per month. Else, it would be bit on a higher side. However, if you can share room with any of your friend you can save some money

Part time jobs

There is a possibility to look for part time jobs while studying. However, it's not so easy. You can try finding part time jobs in your field of study in IT start up companies. Else, there can be  possibility to find odd jobs (Swedish can be a challenge in some cases, though).

Hope this helps. Please feel free to ask me should you have any more questions.

All the best with your application.

Best Regards,

Yash Khatri
