Meet Tessa, MSc student in Organic Chemistry

Why did you choose the MSc in Organic Chemistry?
During my BSc in Natural Science, I discovered that chemistry was the field I enjoyed the most, especially the time spent in the lab. Because of this, I chose to enrol into the MSc in Organic Chemistry. I wanted to spend more time in the lab and learn about the mechanisms behind the chemical processes observed. The first course, Advanced Organic Chemistry, was a great way to start. It combined an individual laboratory synthesis project with lectures that explained the theory behind our experiments. I learned so much during this course, and it provided a great foundation for the rest of the master’s programme.

What have you enjoyed or appreciated most about the programme?
I also appreciated the flexibility within the programme. I had the opportunity to do two short research traineeships during which I learned a lot about how research is conducted at a university and I got to dive deeper into the specific topics of the traineeships, in my case, computational chemistry and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). There is also room for courses outside of the programme. I used this chance to explore the intersections of chemistry with other fields, taking courses in neurochemistry and Geology, both of which I found interesting and broadened my perspective.

What are your plans after graduation, or what do you hope to do next?
In the future, I am considering continuing in research as a PhD. If I choose that path, I feel confident that this master’s programme has equipped me with the knowledge and skills to take on that challenge.
