Translating Comics: International Workshop Co-Organized by Jaqueline Berndt

Professor Jaqueline Berndt from Stockholm University is co-organizing an international workshop titled Translating Comics: Between Bubbles, Cultures, and Constraints in East Asia, taking place on April 10–11, 2026, in Paris and online.

This hybrid workshop, held at the University of Paris Nanterre and conducted in English, brings together experts to explore the unique challenges of translating comics—specifically focusing on works from or into Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, including manhua, manga, manhwa, and webtoons. Organized jointly by Marie Laureillard (Paris Nanterre) and Jaqueline Berndt, with assistance from Wenlan Xiang, the event aims to bridge Translation Studies and Comics Studies with an emphasis on East Asian contexts. The first day highlights issues at the intersection of text, paratext, publication formats, and editorial management, while the second day expands to multimodal, intermedial, and intercultural adaptation.
