Doctoral studies at the Department of Astronomy

The doctoral programme provides a deeper insight into a specific field of astronomy, and provides you with the knowledge and experience required to be a critical and independent researcher.

To be eligible to apply for the doctoral program you must have a Master’s degree in physics/astronomy (or a Bachelor’s degree together with an additional 60 credits of advanced courses in astronomy, of which at least 15 credits are master degree projects). Since competition for available doctoral positions is high, a master’s degree is a merit. The eligibility requirements can also be met by having equivalent education from elsewhere, e.g. a master’s degree in engineering physics.

In order to be admitted to the doctoral programme, the applicant must also have arranged funding. In most cases, the Department of Astronomy provides funding in the form of employment as a doctoral student; these doctoral posts are advertised at least twice a year.
