Courses and programmes

Would you like to understand the physics behind supernovae, exoplanets, or galaxies? Are you an international student who is curious about Sweden and has a background in astronomy or physics? With us, you can study both the underlying scientific theory and carry out observations with research telescopes. In studies of astronomical phenomena you combine many types of knowledge to solve complex problems, teaching you important skills that make you competitive for jobs in industry or graduate studies. The programme is taught entirely in English.

Do you want to apply math and physics to understand what happening in the Universe? Our Bachelor programme in Astronomy give you a solid base in physics, mathematics and astronomy. These skills open up a wide labour market, or lead onward to master studies in physics, astronomy or teaching. The programme is taught in Swedish. Courses taught in English are only offered in the third and final year.

All our courses are possible to take as independent courses. This means that if you are interested in a specific area you can choose to take just that course, without being admitted to one of our programmes. This self-study course has been designed to provide an introductory view to softwares and tools necessary to undertake lab reports as well as final bachelor and master thesis research projects in the bachelor and master programs especially related to astrophysics.

Doctoral studies are the highest level of university education and prepare you to become an independent researcher. As a PhD student in astronomy at Stockholm University, you will join an internationally active research environment and work in a research group alongside PhD students, senior researchers and professors. You will develop skills in problem-solving, critical thinking and independent work—skills that are valuable both in research and in other sectors.
