As a new student at Stockholm University, you probably have many questions about how everything works. Here we have collected all you need to know in order to start your studies.

If you are new in Sweden, the university has collected information on visas, accommodation, insurance and other practicalities you need to keep track of.

Before you start your studies, you need to activate your university account to access all the services at Stockholm University.

In order to retain the place you have been admitted to, it is important that you register for your courses. The registration serves as confirmation that you are taking the course, and it is done via the Ladok system. Registration typically opens two weeks before and closes one week after the start of the course.

If you are conditionally admitted, you need to contact our Academic advisor before you can register.

Athena is Stockholm University’s digital learning platform. All our courses use Athena, and this is where you will find information during the course and can communicate with the teacher. When you register for a course, you automatically obtain access to the course page in Athena.

In addition to lectures and exams, many other activities take place at the university. There is a rich student life and many opportunities to become involved in one’s education. At the beginning of the semester the Natural Science Association (NF) organizes welcome activities for new students. For international and exchange students Stockholm University also arrange welcome activities at the begining of each semester.

The Department of Astronomy is located on the 6the floor of the main building of the AlbaNova University Centre. The building is within walking distance of Stockholm University’s main campus, Frescati, and is adjacent to the newly built Albano area.

Student Office

At the student office, you can get information and assistance with matters related to your studies at the Department of Astronomy. This includes questions about examinations, re‑registration for a course, study certificates and registration transcripts, as well as picking up access cards and much more.

Academic Advisor, undergraduate level

The Academic Advisor provides guidance on admission procedures, degree requirements, and course selection. Support with individualized study plans is offered to students who have fallen behind. The advisor may also be consulted regarding career prospects.
