At the Department of Chemistry, there is a professional role that is seldom visible externally but plays a crucial part in world-class research. The staff scientist is the engine driving progress forward and enabling groundbreaking discoveries at the highest international level.

Through their expertise, support, education and training they provide, they create the technical and methodological foundations that make research possible – every single day.

“We work at the heart of our research infrastructure, ensuring that scientific instruments function optimally, is continuously improved, and is used by students and researchers in the best possible way,” explains Ken Inge.

Innovating behind the scenes

Mirva Eriksson explains that, at the Department of Chemistry, staff scientists establish and refine robust protocols that enable new discoveries. They also provide qualified support to researchers throughout the entire process – from planning and user training to experimental work and data analysis. In addition, they are involved in the procurement of new instruments.

Although the primary focus of staff scientists is to support and strengthen the work of others, they also conduct research themselves, in instrument method and development. By staying at the forefront of research, they can offer specialized expertise and drive technological advancement.

Collaboration and curiosity that strengthen research

The role of a staff rscientist involves close collaboration with many people – from new and returning students to researchers and international colleagues. By sharing knowledge, building networks, and developing ideas together, staff researchers contribute both to day-to-day research and to strengthening the Department of Chemistry’s long-term expertise, reputation and international standing competitiveness.

“It’s incredibly rewarding; these collaborations give me the chance to learn about research that others are conducting and by sharing our knowledge and ideas we can further advance our research in ways we couldn´t alone,” says Ken.

Staff scientists also serve as strategic partners within the research environment, helping to create new opportunities through collaborations and external funding.

“Through my research expertise, I’ve helped secure new grants for the department and establish new collaborations with international colleagues,” says Jing Li.

Inspiring the next generation of chemists

Ken explains that he, besides the role as a staff scientist, also promotes public and youth interest in chemistry through initiatives such as upper secondary school visits to the department, as well as activities where students can experience science through hands-on laboratory work.

“I really enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for chemistry and crystallography, and I find it very uplifting to see students curious to learn more about these topics. Watching their curiosity develop and grow motivates me, and I strive to spark a lasting interest, says Ken.

Jing Li, agrees with Ken that sharing research with young people and the public is one of the most enjoyable parts of the job as a researcher.

“I truly value the opportunity to share our work in the Department of Chemistry and inspire young people to explore science through initiatives that connect research with the next generation of students. It is a very rewarding experience,” concludes Jing Li.

Being a staff scientist

A staff scientist role suits those who want to use their expertise to make a meaningful impact on others’ research, combining deep scientific knowledge with tangible results. Staff scientists are often responsible for specific research instruments and provide training for new users on how to operate them.

The role combines scientific rigor with technical expertise to support research and ensure the smooth operation of research infrastructures and technology platforms. Staff scientists work in industry, research institutes, and major international laboratories in Sweden and around the world.

A PhD in a relevant field, along with proven scientific and technical competence, is typically required for this role.
