Courses and programmes

The Department of Child and Youth Studies educates students who will go on to teach in Swedish preschools and in after-school care. For international students, we offer courses taught in English with a focus on Early Childhood Education and School-Age Educare.

Welcome to study with us! We have courses and programmes at both first and second level. We give Teacher Education Programmes and courses within the subject fields of Child and Youth studies, Early Childhood Education and Care, School-Age Education and Care and Children's Culture. The majority of our courses and programmes are given in Swedish.

Courses for international students

We offer the following three courses in Early Childhood Education and Care at first level. The content corresponds to courses given the third semester in our Swedish Preschool Teacher Education Programme.

The courses in Early Childhood Education are offered both during the autumn and spring semester. An advantage with these courses is that Swedish students from the Swedish Preschool Teacher Education Programme can choose these courses which means that exchange students will get to know local students during the courses.

Early Childhood Education focusing on Science and Education for Sustainability, 12 credits (UB313F)

Early Childhood Education focusing on Mathematics and Technology, 12 credits (UB314F) 

Early Childhood Education: Explorative Learning, 6 credits (UB308F). The course will be offered for the last time the autumn semester 2025 and then be replaced by UB316F and UB317F.

New courses offered in the spring semester 2026

Exploratory approaches in Swedish preschool: history, theory and practice, 3 credits (UB316F)

Participation and influence in children´s exploratory activities, 3 credits (UB317F)

We offer one course in School-Age Education and Care, first level. During the course you will learn about Swedish school-age childcare which is also known as Afterschool care. Theories about children’s play and learning will be introduced and discussed and you will learn about outdoor pedagogy.

Schoolage Educare, 15 credits (UB129F)

The course is offered during autumn semesters and can be combined with two of the Early Childhood Education courses or with a 15-credit course offered by another department.

Postgraduate studies

The duration of the graduate studies programme is four years and corresponds to eight semesters of full-time studies (240 credits). The programme consists of a course part and a dissertation part. The sum total of the courses amounts to 90 Higher Education Credits, with 1,5 credits corresponding to one week of fulltime studies. The dissertation work is expected to take five terms of fulltime studies.
