Visiting Researcher in Criminology

The Department of Criminology invites applications from academics, including professors, postdocs, and PhD students, who wish to spend 1-6 months participating in the academic life at the department.

Applications are welcome from any academic researcher in criminology, or other relevant fields, although preference is given to applicants whose research is related to the research topics of the Criminology Department.

Visiting researchers are provided with a workspace and access to the library, which includes online access to a vast number of academic journals. We do not charge any fees for visiting scholars.

Unfortunately, we cannot offer any financial support related to this position, nor can we offer any help with accommodation. If you are accepted as a visiting researcher, you may be eligible for accommodation for visiting researchers or you may receive help from the university’s Housing Office.

Visiting researchers are expected to participate in the academic life of the department, and should be prepared to present their research at a seminar. Please contact our seminar leader Maria Andersson Vogel as soon as you are accepted as a visiting researcher to book a seminar date: maria.vogel@criminology.su.se.

Importantly, please note that if you are going to do research on people, or sensitive personal data during your stay, you need to apply for ethical review. The application is extensive, it has to be written in/translated to Swedish, the submission fee is 5000 SEK, and the review process takes about two months. This means that an ethical application most likely has to be prepared before your visit. Please read more at the webpage of the Swedish Ethical Review Authority.

Please also be aware that the working language at the department is Swedish, which means that our meetings, and many of our seminars are in Swedish. However, we all speak English and will be happy to practice it.

Applying to be a Visiting Researcher

Applications should be made well in advance of your chosen dates. We accept visitors during the teaching semesters, since that is when we are active at the department. This means that we can welcome visitors from mid-August until mid-December, and from mid-January until mid-June.

Please email a cover letter, your CV, and a 2-page summary of your proposed research, outlining what you hope to achieve during your visit at the department. PhD students should also include a letter of recommendation from their supervisor. Be so kind and make sure that all the documents are in English (or Swedish), and send them to professor Susanne Alm: susanne.alm@criminology.su.se

We process the applications three times every semester.
