MOMENTS OF SCENE-MAKING

“Making a scene,” both literally and metaphorically, is what “the other (l’autre)” tends to do, expectedly or unexpectedly. This lecture spotlights such otherworldly moments from art history, theory and philosophy inter alia, focusing on the momentary swerve of cogito interruptus, Cartesian or otherwise.

Kyoo Lee aka Q, Professor of Philosophy at CUNY and the Editor-in-Chief of philoSOPHIA, is a philosopher, writer, art critic and curator trained in literary, visual, and architectural theories as well as mathematical logic and phenomenology. A peripatetic researcher working across academic and artistic venues, Q’s philopoetic work explores co-generative links between critical theory, creative prose, and curatorial practice. Her first book Reading Descartes Otherwise (2012), and a forthcoming book on visual philopoetics, expand on such other cues in otherness, often retrofuturally lodged in polyphonic texts. She is the founding curator of the ESTUAR Series in Venice, where “water meets water.” She has served as the guest curator at Museo d’Arte Orientale, Turin for the exhibition, The Rabbit Inhabits the Moon, 2024-5. She also serves on the board of directors at AICA-USA.
