Alongside Dr. Jonathan Foster, who completed his PhD at Stockholm, Professor Whiteley edited the book Dickens and Decadence which was published in October 2025, and as experts about the decadent side to Dickens’ writing, they were invited to participate in the podcast.
The other participants were Professor Holly Furneux of Cardiff University and Dr. Grace Moore of University of Otago, alongside guest host Professor John Plotz of Brandeis University. The conversation took place for The Literary Encyclopedia, a website for exploring literature, history and culture.
The topics range from Charles Dickens’ engagement with the British empire and global trade, to his international celebrity, fan fiction and literary afterlives. Several works by Dickens and later scholars are discussed.
The podcast is available now, and will also be broadcasted by the non-profit radio station OAR on February 7, which is Charles Dickens birthday, no less. The easiest way to listen to the podcast is following this link, which leads to this particular podcast on OAR’s website.
