About us

The Earth is changing faster than ever, and those shifts are already shaping everyday life for people around the world. As awareness grows about how human activity impacts the environment, Sweden has long been ahead of the curve—becoming the first country to establish an environmental protection agency back in 1967.

Sweden is known for leading the way in sustainability and we’re proud to be part of that story. Our goal is simple: to help build a healthier, more sustainable society through world-class research and education in environmental science. With scientists from all corners of the natural sciences, our department thrives on openness, collaboration and an environment where everyone can grow and contribute.

Tackling today’s environmental challenges starts with understanding them. Our research spans four core areas: chemical contaminants, atmospheric science, biogeochemistry and (eco)toxicology. We study everything from local environments in Sweden and Europe to global systems, using cutting-edge facilities, advanced modelling and powerful data-analysis tools. Alongside our teaching, research and outreach, we actively support Swedish and European environmental agencies with science-based guidance for policy and decision-making.

With teams based both at our historic Frescati campus and our new home at Science for Life Laboratory, Campus Solna, we’re now a community of around 170 faculty, researchers, PhD students and staff from more than 30 countries. Together, we’ve consistently ranked among the top institutions globally in environmental science, and our alumni go on to become policymakers, consultants and researchers shaping real-world change.

Every day, we work with one shared purpose: a healthier environment, a happier society and a future we can all believe in.
