Studying abroad provides an excellent opportunity to broaden both your academic and cultural horizons. By spending one or two semesters at a partner institution, you can take courses not offered at Stockholm University, experience a different academic environment, and gain valuable international perspectives.

This experience will enhance your CV, improve your language proficiency, and develop your intercultural competence. We encourage you to take full advantage of this opportunity during your studies at Stockholm University to build a strong international skill set.

Exchange Studies

As a student at Stockholm University, you have numerous opportunities to study at one of our partner universities. Stockholm University is part of several international networks and has exchange agreements with hundreds of universities globally. Additionally, the Faculty of Science and the Department Environmental Science have area-specific collaborations also available to you.

If you choose to undertake exchange studies through the aforementioned agreements and networks, you will receive guidance and support from the department’s international coordinator and Stockholm University’s International Office. In some cases, it is even possible to apply for a scholarship. Furthermore, you will be covered by the Student OUT insurance provided by Kammarkollegiet.

Where can I go?

Stockholm University maintains active partnerships around the globe, accessible to all students. These include the networks such as CIVIS, Nordlys and north2north, alongside bilateral agreements with universities outside Europe.
In addition, the Faculty of Science and the Department of Environmental Science hold specialised exchange agreements with leading international universities:

Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) Zürich in Switzerland

Nanyang Technological University of Singapore

The Department of Environmental Science has several agreements within the Erasmus+ programme with universities in Germany:

Aachen University in Germany

University of Bayreuth in Germany

Goethe University Frankfurt in Germany

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany (Geo-ecology with courses taught in English)

How do I apply?

You must first apply for exchange studies through SU’s Mobility Online form, during the periods specified under “When do I apply”.

In this initial application, you will select the universities you are interested in and proivide your motivation for pursuing exchange studies. Please ensure you carefully read the eligibility requirements and selection criteria outlined on the pages for the various exchanges programmes (see links below).

Once your application has been approved and subject to availability of exchange places, Stockholm University will nominate you for exchange studies at the host university. Following this, the host university will guide you through their own application process, which will include, among other things, s selecting the courses you wish to take.

Additionally, before applying for exchange studies, it is advisable to consult the department’s international coordinator to explore the best options available to you.

When can I apply for exchange studies?

The call for applications for exchange studies can be found on SU’s page on central networks and agreements. These applications are handled by the International Office at Student Services.

For the partnerships managed by the Faculty of Science and the Department of Environmental Science, application deadlines vary depending on your intended destination. These applications are processed by the department’s international coordinator.

For our collaborations outside Europe the application periods are as follows:

For collaborations within Europe, including universities participating in the Erasmus+ programme as well as partners outside the programme the application periods are as follows:

You can also choose to study abroad independently, without being limited to universities we have formal agreements with. This option gives you a great deal of freedom, but it also means that you are responsible for obtaining all the necessary information yourself, managing course selection and applications, maintaining contact with universities and authorities and covering any tuition fees.
