Stockholm University ranks among the top 50 in the world in Environmental Science
In the 2025 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, Stockholm University is ranked among the top 50 universities globally in three subjects—and holds the top national position in seven. Environmental Science stands out with a global ranking of 39th, making Stockholm University the highest-ranked institution in Sweden in this field.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject are published annually by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a global higher education analytics firm. The rankings assess universities across five broad subject areas and 55 specific academic disciplines, based on indicators such as academic reputation, employer reputation, and research impact.
Environmental Science in the global top 50
The ranking reflects Stockholm University’s strong international standing in Environmental Science, built on cutting-edge research and active interdisciplinary collaboration. The university’s work in this field addresses some of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time—from climate change and pollution to biodiversity loss and sustainable resource use.
Seven subjects ranked best in Sweden
In addition to Environmental Science, Stockholm University ranks highest in Sweden in six other subjects: Sociology, Social Policy & Administration, Linguistics, Anthropology, Philosophy (shared with the University of Gothenburg and Uppsala University), and Education (shared with the University of Gothenburg). The university also holds Sweden’s top position in the broader subject area of Arts & Humanities.
