KVA 2025 Geosciences Scholarships

Two PhD Students Awarded the 2025 Geosciences Scholarships from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (Kungl. Vetenskapsakademien) has awarded the 2025 Geosciences Scholarships to two of IGVs outstanding PhD students for their innovative research projects.

Congratulations to Antonia Schell and Sophie ten Hietbrink

Antonia Schell received 140,000 SEK for the project Natural and Anthropogenic Influences on Weathering in the Northern Baltic Sea Catchment in which she investigates how the transport of metals and particles from river catchments in northern Sweden to the Baltic Sea is influenced by both human activities and natural geochemical processes.

Sophie ten Hietbrink was awarded 159,255 SEK for the project Emplacement Mechanisms and Post-Glacial Salinization Rates of Offshore Freshened Paleogroundwater. Using 14C-dating of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in both fresh and overlying saline groundwater, she will determine the emplacement timing of the fresh groundwater, providing insights into glacial mechanisms driving freshwater recharge, and constrain post-glacial salinization rates.

These scholarships highlight the Academy’s continued commitment to supporting young researchers.
