Research at the Department of Geological Sciences

Stockholm University is a leading research university that conducts basic independent research and applied research in the human and natural sciences. Our research produces internationally recognised scientific breakthroughs.

Doctoral studies take four years and result in a PhD, the highest academic degree in Sweden. There is also a two-year research study program which ends in a degree of licentiate.

The Department of Geological Sciences has three research education programmes: Geochemistry, Geology and Marine Geology. This education ends with a degree as Licentiate of Philosophy and/or Doctor of Philosophy in one of the three programmes.

Meet Sophie ten Hietbrink, PhD student in Geochemistry

– As a PhD student you meet many inspiring scientists along the way, all with their own area of expertise. These encounters are not only limited to your specific field of research. For example, I followed courses about ‘Gender and Science’ and ‘Visualize your Science’ which really broadened my perspectives on inclusivity and science communication. Furthermore, what I really appreciate about geosciences is that we study natural processes that can be observed in nature, making your research less abstract. This also entails that you might get to go out in the field to collect your own samples. I have been fortunate enough to visit Svalbard, an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, three times already. The sheer magnificence of these natural environments will never wear off.

Admission to the PhD program is only possible by applying to an announced PhD position. Carefully follow the instructions for making your application as indicated in the announcement, and submit your documents before the deadline.

The deadlines for applications for PhD positions at the Department of Geological Sciences

January 15 and September 15: Available positions are announced.
February 15 and October 15: Deadline for applications.
