Department of History, room D837 and on ZoomThis talk first introduces the Reconstructed East Asian Climate Historical Encoded Series (REACHES) database which digitizes Chinese documentary records of the last two millennia and can be utilized without a knowledge of Chinese language.
The second part focuses on the application of the REACHES to study past extreme events such as droughts and typhoons. A comprehensive example will be given to introduce our methodology in reconstructing typhoon frequency and intensity since the mid-14th century and its implications for social impact research.

Management and Environmental Education, National Taiwan Normal University. She specializes in climate reconstruction and climate–society interaction research. She has led the team to create REACHES database to facilitate global usage of the Chinese documentary records in the study of climate and society in history.
