The Department of Human Geography is relatively small – which provides good conditions for good contacts between students, teachers and other staff. At the same time, the institution is large enough to be able to offer courses and supervision within a broad spectrum. The department offers a good and stimulating study environment with close links between education, research and the labor market.
Our courses and programmes
With us you can choose between free standing courses or an entire programme. You can study at the under-graduate level (first cycle) for a bachelor's degree, at graduate level (second cycle) for a master's degree and at post-graduate level (third cycle) for a doctorate.
The language of instruction in all first cycle programmes – and most courses – is Swedish. In the second cycle all programmes and courses are in English. The language used at the post-graduate programme is either English or Swedish.
Subjects and fields of study
The courses you study – freestanding or within a program – can form part of a degree in one or more main field of study.
Studying at the Department of Human Geography
Stockholm is an excellent place to study human geography, urban planning and geography. There are many interesting study objects and good (and bad) examples of past and ongoing regional planning here.

Close link between education and research
Our education clearly reflect the department's research and active researchers teach at all levels. Both experienced teachers and younger academics participate in the teaching of our courses.
A content-rich and inspiring education
When you start studying at the Department of Human Geography, you can look forward to new knowledge and insights, new friends and contacts, a lot of intensive studying and many content-rich and inspiring days.
On-site education in Sweden and in other countries
During excursions and field courses, you also get to know areas, conditions and stakeholders outside the Stockholm region. Even in the teaching in general, examples are taken from a variety of places and countries. Some courses have an emphasis on Sweden and Europe, while other courses focus on the global south.
If you are interested, there are also good opportunities to study at one of our partner universities within the framework of our exchange programs.
Premises on campus
The tutoring takes place to a large extent in the Geo-Science Building (in Swedish “Geovetenskapens hus”) – at the northern part of the University main campus Frescati, situated within the Royal National City Park at northern Djurgården in the City of Stockholm.
In addition to modern lecture rooms, the building also has reading areas and rooms for group work.

A capital close to nature
As a student at Stockholm University you get the benefit of living in the Swedish capital. It is close to the Parliament and ministries, many central works and authorities, small and large municipalities, companies, political parties and interest organizations. The region's range of libraries, archives, museums and other institutions are also important assets. Stockholm has a good range of leisure activities, culture, sports and entertainment, and is close to nature.
