Research subjects

We have leading researchers in urban geography, historical geography and landscape studies, agricultural geography, migration and population geography, economic geography, gender and planning, and Geographical Information Systems.

This includes studies in Europe – particularly in Sweden – as well as in other parts of the world, with emphasis on Africa south of the Sahara. Some faculty and doctoral students have interests in more than one research profile. Part of the research is carried out with partners throughout the University and in cooperation with researchers in other organizations in Sweden and abroad.

Historical Geography and Landscape Studies

Historical geography and landscape studies use qualitative and quantitative methodologies to understand how people's life trajectories are shaped and to analyze how individual life trajectories affect aggregate development patterns.

Urban and Regional Research

Our research engages with debates in urban, cultural, and economic geography as well as spatial planning, governance and policy studies.

Urban Africa

The research investigates the multi-faceted social, economic and political processes shaping cities on the African continent.
