Join us for a talk on one of the most prominent art restitution cases to reach the U.S. Supreme Court. Professor Vázquez will recount the Cassirer family’s decades-long effort to recover a Pissarro painting stolen by the Nazis and now held by a Spanish state museum. Vázquez has participated in the case as an expert on issues of Public International Law and as a commentator on issues of Private International Law. He will offer insights into the case’s complex path through the U.S. federal courts, the public international law issues it raised, and the difficult questions of applicable law that shaped the litigation.

This talk will appeal to anyone interested in cultural heritage, international law, and the pursuit of justice across borders.

Bio: Carlos M. Vázquez is the Scott K. Ginsburg Professor of Law at Georgetown University, where he teaches Public International Law, Conflict of Laws (Private International Law), Foreign Relations Law, and Federal Courts and the Federal System, among other courses.
