The Summer Programme offers a perfectly balanced mix of classes and free time, allowing for many day trips and sightseeing activities.

Why did you choose to study at SULaw Summer programme 2024?

I chose the SULaw Summer Programme in 2024 for its unique opportunity to study law in Sweden. The timing aligned with Deakin University's mid-year break, allowing me to earn a credit point, explore a new country and immerse myself in the country’s culture for the short time I was there. I saw this two-week course as a chance to broaden my legal knowledge but also make lasting friendships with people from all over the world.

When selecting a summer program, Stockholm University stood out due to its diverse course offerings and comprehensive support. The program's organisation of accommodation and social activities made it an attractive choice, allowing me to focus on academic and cultural immersion.

Which courses did you choose and why did you choose them?

I was fortunate to study two separate electives during my stay, including the Fashion Intellectual Property Law and EU Consumer Law classes.

Having been fascinated by Intellectual Property Law, I was excited at the opportunity to explore its intersection with the fashion industry. Studying this specialised topic allowed me to gain valuable insights into the Sweden and the EU’s unique IP landscape. The mix of theory and class exercises was appealing to my learning style, and meant I could fully understand and engage with the topics being learnt about.

I selected EU Consumer Law as I thought it would be interesting to compare the differences in consumer rights from Australia to the EU. In particular, I learnt that the EU has passenger rights and compensation schemes, something that doesn’t exist in Australia! Having done a unit at Deakin University that focusses on some consumer law, I picked EU Consumer Law to expand my knowledge and understanding of rights with respect to goods and services.

What are your tips and tricks to make the best of the course(s)?

Immerse yourself in the experience and learn the most you can – the course goes by so quickly! Partaking in the social activities organised by the SULaw team was integral to forming friendships and relationships with other students, but also the teaching staff. Having classes with people from all over the world is another opportunity to learn more about other cultures and experiences. Compare, ask questions, and share your own perspectives!

What did you enjoy the most during your stay in Stockholm?

Stockholm is a fantastic mix of young nightlife and culture, traditional architecture, rich history, and delicious food. The city is incredibly easy and convenient to navigate, making exploration a breeze. The Summer Programme offers a perfectly balanced mix of classes and free time, allowing for many day trips and sightseeing activities. A highlight was definitely attending Swedish summer concerts at Gröna Lund, and Allsång at Skansen. And, of course, I thoroughly enjoyed embracing the Swedish tradition of daily fikas.

Why should other students choose to study our summer programme?

I would highly recommend the SULaw Summer Programme to other students for the opportunity to gain invaluable insights into international law, taught by academics from over the world and each bringing their own unique perspectives. Further, the ability to engage in Sweden’s culture which is supported by the SULaw team in their social activities and providing recommendations as to what to see and do. Sweden is a corner of the globe rich with culture, beautiful architecture and an interesting history, all of which in combination with studying at Stockholm University provides for an excellent experience.
