Research on epistemicity is a young and vibrant field within linguistics, encompassing studies of evidentiality (source of evidence), epistemic modality (certainty or lack thereof), egophoricity (involvement in the described situation), or engagement (relations between interlocutors), and many other subfields, the description of which is still in its infancy.

This meeting at Stockholm University will provide a starting point for an official cross-institutional synergy, resulting in future collaborations between individual researchers, as well as research groups and departments.

 

Workshop 1–2 June 2022

The workshop is organized in a hybrid format by researchers Karolina Grzech and Henrik Bergqvist (Department of Linguistics). Researchers from Finland and Germany will participate on site and researchers from Spain, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands will participate online.

9:30–11:00	Discussion 1: Evidentiality, egophoricity, speech act participation What can we learn from functional parallels between egophoric and evidential systems? To what extent do reportative evidentials share the properties of other types of evidential expression? How do we incorporate the interactional properties of evidentials, such as their position in an interactional sequence, into their analysis in a consistent way?

11:30–12:30	Discussion 2: Typology of epistemic expressions What should we take into account when comparing epistemic systems? How can we ensure that we compare like with like when it comes to epistemic and intersubjective expressions? How can comparative/typological research contribute to a viable, empirically grounded theory of evidentiality and other epistemic categories?

14:30–16:00	Discussion 3: Epistemic marking and context What counts as context in the analysis of epistemic expressions? How can intersubjective aspects of context be quantified and compared? What aspects of context should be documented in a corpus to enable subsequent work on epistemic expressions?
