Abstract:

Phonotacticon is a cross-linguistic database. It contains the segments and the sequences of segments permitted in the onset, nucleus, and coda position of each lect, as well as the phonemic and tonemic inventories.

Following the release of the first version of Phonotacticon (Joo & Hsu ahead of print), I am currently focusing on building its next version covering all macroareas, as well as venturing into the potential research outcomes we may be able to gain from it.

In this talk, I will briefly introduce to the audience the structure of the database, as well as introducing the analysis of phonological distance between Eurasian lects I was able to measure based on it (Joo & Hsu under review).

The latter part of the talk will be a small interactive workshop where everyone is invited to bring a laptop and play with the tidied version of the database I will provide, to have a hands-on experience on the database and brainstorm on the potential research possibilities.
