Abstract

The topic of my dissertation is child-parent interaction and its relation to child language development. The investigated material is part of the longitudinal corpus of the MINT project, consisting of dyadic interaction annotated on a multimodal level. In this talk I will present two of my studies.

• The first study focuses on joint attention between 12-month-old children and their parents. Associations between joint attention and core language and pragmatic abilities up to 11 years of age were examined, as well as whether such relationships were moderated by child gender or the amount of parental vocal input.
• The second study investigates parental repetition of child utterances at five timepoints from the age of 1 to 3 years. Repetitions were examined from three perspectives: their timing, developmental changes in frequency, and associations with later language development. Analyses also addressed whether different structural types of repetitions follow distinct developmental trajectories.

Results from both studies will be presented during the talk.
