Student influence at the Department of Mathematics

Students have a right to be represented when decisions concerning education are prepared or made. On this page you can find information about student representation at the Department of Mathematics.

As a student at Stockholm University and the Department of Mathematics, you have the opportunity to influence your education and study environment.

Student influence is an important part of the university’s quality assurance work and according to the Swedish higher education act, students have the right to be represented when decisions concerning education are prepared or made.

At the Department of Mathematics, student influence takes place through student councils, student representatives, course evaluations, and ongoing dialogue between students and staff.

More information about students’ rights and opportunities to influence their education is available on the university’s central webpages:

Student representation

Students at both undergraduate and doctoral level are represented in several decision-making and advisory bodies at the department.

At the Department of Mathematics, student representatives participate in, for example:

  • the department board
  • programme councils
  • working groups related to developing courses and programmes

Student representatives from the department also participate in bodies at faculty and university level.

Student representatives at departmental level are normally appointed through the Mathematics student council (MSR) and the PhD council, in cooperation with the Stockholm University Student Union (SUS).

The Mathematics student council (Matematiska studentrådet, MSR) represents students enrolled in courses and programmes, both in Bachelor and Master’s level, at the Department of Mathematics.

MSR works to strengthen student influence and represents students in matters related to education and the study environment. The council also organizes social and academic activities such as study sessions, competitions, and community events.

Students can engage in the work of MSR by:

  • attending meetings
  • becoming student representatives
  • helping organize activities and events

Serving as a student representative is an opportunity to influence the education while gaining valuable experience.

Doctoral students at the Department of Mathematics are organized through the PhD council, which represents doctoral students in matters related to doctoral education and the doctoral work environment.

The PhD council appoints doctoral student representatives to several departmental bodies, including the department board and other groups where issues concerning doctoral education are discussed.

In addition to participating in student councils, students can contribute to the development of education through:

  • course councils and student–teacher meetings
  • contact with course coordinators or directors of studies
  • dialogue with student representatives or departmental contact persons
  • participation in course evaluations

Course Evaluations

Course evaluations are an important way for students to influence their education. After each completed course, students are invited to provide feedback on the course content, structure, and teaching.

Previous course evaluations and course reports are available on the course archive pages on kurser.math.su.se.

More information about course evaluations and how the results are used is available on the university’s central webpage

Questions regarding a course evaluation should be directed to the course coordinator or responsible teacher.

Women in Mathematics (KIM)

KIM – Women in Mathematics is an initiative at the Department of Mathematics conducted as a pilot project during the 2025–2026 academic year.

The initiative aims to strengthen community, participation, and well-being among students who identify as women. KIM also seeks to encourage more women to continue studying mathematics by creating a platform where women and non-binary students can meet, exchange experiences, and support one another throughout their studies.

Information about activities and current contact details for the KIM assistants is available on the KIM page on kurser.math.su.se.
