Electronics & electricity

The Technical Division has a broad competence in analog and digital electronics as well as in power installations. The division has an electronics workshop equipped with tools and instrumentation for development, assembly and measurement, and a stock of components. The electronics group within the Technical Division can offer everything from simple repairs, assembly and installation to development and design of advanced instrumentation electronics.

There are several persons who (mainly) work with electronics & electricity:

  • Attila Hidvégi (development, design and construction of digital electronics, FPGA and firmware programming, software development)
  • Per Halldén (electrical installations)
  • Mikael Björkhage (instrumentation, system installation, electronics service)

We can assemble most things from simple to high-voltage, high-frequency, vacuum-suitable cables, from plated-through-hole boards to surface-mounted designs down to 0402 (metric component size 0.4 mm x 0.2 mm) and simple BGAs (Ball Grid Array connection arrangement), and from simple boxes to full racks and subracks. For larger quantities or advanced assemblies and front panels we have experience with external companies. In the workshop we have among other tools:

  • Soldering stations
  • Reflow oven 30x30 cm
  • Pre-heater
  • Hot air
  • Variety of crimp tools

Some tools are located in the workshop/Technical Division, others are available elsewhere at the department.

  • Spectrum analyzers (5kHz-1GHz/1Hz BW, 1Hz-3GHz-1Hz)
  • EMC (electromagnetic compatibility): Near field probes, current clamp, LISN (Line Impedance Stabilization Network), shielded room
  • Oscilloscopes (4x200 MHz, 2x100 MHz battery powered, faster available at the department)
  • Logic analyzer
  • Function generators (3 MHz, 30 MHz, 200 MHz)
  • Multimeters
  • Laboratory power supplies

The Technical Division can help with electrical and other infrastucture installations for labs and experiments and has a large number of standard components.

  • High-speed data acquisition systems:
    • High-speed 4-channel ADC board with USB 3.0 - (SuperSpeed) connection.
    • High-resolution multichannel time-tagging and coincidence detector unit.
  • TileCal daughter board for Atlas upgrade: 14 layer PCB, 2x Xilinx Ultrascale+ FPGA, 4x 10GB SFP+
  • Raspberry Pi/touchscreen controlled systems
