Other services by the Technical Division

Accelerator physics and technology is another field in which many of the staff members of the Technical Division have been active over a long period of time. Before moving to AlbaNova and Fysikum to form what would be the Technical Division several of the technicians were working at the Manne Siegbahn Laboratory with the construction, maintenance and operation of the CRYRING ion storage ring. At the end of the CRYRING era these technicians were also strongly involved in the design and construction of what would become the DESIREE project.

In addition to vacuum technology, which plays a key role in many accelerators, the division can therefore provide technical support also in areas like:

• Ion sources
• Ion optics
• Ion diagnostics
• Collision cells
• Control systems
• Detectors

On the detector side the division primarily has experience from working with the so called Multi-Channel Plate (MCP) detectors since they have been, and are, of great importance for both the CRYRING and DESIREE projects. Within the division it is mainly Stefan Rosén who has been working with these detectors where he, among other things, has developed systems to improve properties like count rate and position sensitivity for different types of MCP detector systems.

The AlbaNova nanofabrication facility is a joint recourse shared between Stockholm University and KTH with a wide range of equipment and expertise. It is an open user facility which means that the nanofabrication should be performed by the users themselves. The nanolab staff is essentially there to support the users, introduce users to the equipment and to take care of the maintenance of the equipment. In order to get access to the facility and its equipment one has to apply to become a user. The technical division has a staff member, Taras Golod that works more or less full time at the AlbaNova nanolab. Taras is mainly responsible for the following equipment in the nanolab:

• Eurovac e-beam deposition system
• "Sputnik" e-beam deposition/ion milling system
• AJA magnetron sputtering system
• Bonder
• SEM/FIB system for 3D imaging
• Plasmalab 80+ and Plasmalab 100 reactive ion etchers
• Optical lithography system

Even though Taras only is responsible for part of the equipment in the nanolab he can be consulted regarding questions concerning nanofabrication in general and how to get access to the facility. Most of the services concerning permanent installations of electrical power, compressed air, air and water cooling etc. are provided by AlbaNova and questions regarding these matters should be addressed directly to Viktor Mannervik. In cases where the responsibility isn’t very clear it is always a good idea to consult the Technical Division since we often work as an interface between AlbaNova and the lab users. Several members of the Technical Division have long time experience working with most things that concern lab installations and lab infrastructure. Once the permanent installations are installed we can, for example, provide help with the distribution of electrical power, water cooling and compressed air to the experimental equipment. The division provides a large variety of services including, but not limited, to

• Electrical power distribution
• Cooling water distribution
• Compressed air distribution
• Installation of alarm systems
• Design and assembly of support structures (“Item” systems)
• ... and more.

Note that the division mostly only can offer the manpower for these types of installations. The hardware needed, like connectors, pressure reducers, tubing, Item profiles, and so on must be provided by the lab owners themselves. The division can assist to find the suppliers and right equipment needed for the installations.

The Technical Division has started to build up a resource that will provide support and competence regarding safety, protection and work environment in the laboratories at Fysikum.

The Technical division at Fysikum is currently building up a new laser and optics support branch to offer better service to research groups working with lasers and advanced optical equipment. The newly employed laser technician Muhammad Sadiq provides technical support in these fields and contributes to maintaining a high level of competence and safety.

• laser beam transport and alignment
• characterization of laser beams
• design of optical systems
• laser safety training
• laser lab safety
