Project description
The Trapped Ion Quantum Technology Group at Stockholm University is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to contribute to pioneering research in open-system quantum simulations with trapped Rydberg ions in two dimensions. This position is part of the ERC Synergy project "Open 2D Quantum Simulator (OPEN-2QS)".
The OPEN-2QS project aims to develop a 2D quantum simulator for open-system quantum dynamics using trapped ions excited to Rydberg states. This novel approach combines fast interactions with long-term stability, enabling the simulation and study of a broad range of phenomena, including novel states of matter, molecular dynamics, and quantum thermodynamics.
The project is experimental and will be carried out within the Trapped Ion Quantum Technology Group at Stockholm University, and in close collaboration with experimentalists and theoreticians at the Universities of Mainz and Tübingen.

Main responsibilities
The position involves
- Design, construction and operation of a cryogenic ion trap experiment for 2d ion crystals
- Laser excitation of trapped ions to Rydberg states.
- High-precision measurements and data analysis of quantum and structural dynamics in the trapped-ion system.
- Investigating novel applications of Rydberg-ion-based quantum simulation
- Close collaboration with experimental and theory groups at the Universities of Mainz and Tübingen.
- Co- supervision of PhD and Master’s students
- Contribution to reporting and documentation for the ERC Synergy project.
