Courses for doctoral studies

The course part of the doctoral program corresponds to 60 higher education credits, of which at least half must be achieved by the time of the licentiate seminar. The courses are typically a combination of recommended courses for all doctoral students and more specialized courses.

Doctoral courses at Fysikum, both mandatory and specialized courses:

Complex topics in medical radiation physics FK40004, 10 credits
Colloquia in Physics, FK40001, 10 credits
Further particle physics, FK40007, 7.5 credits
Introduction to Doctoral Studies at the Department of Physics FK40005, 5 credits
Introduction to Quantum Technologies FK40006, 7,5 credits
Quantum Chemical Methods in Chemical Physics, FK40002, 15 credits
Surface and Liquid Physics FK40003, 10 credits
Literature review FK40008, 7,5 credits

The courses are classified as mandatory courses, recommended courses, general courses and specialized courses.

The mandatory courses are:

Colloquia in Physics, FK40001, 10 credits, a course intended to fulfil the requirement of broad knowledge within the subject. The course plan is decided by the board of the Department of Physics.

Introduction to Doctoral Studies at the Department of Physics FK40005, 5 credits, a course giving an introduction to the Department of Physics and to doctoral studies. The course includes "Research ethics and proper scientific conduct", a seminar series intended to fulfil the requirement regarding ethics and conduct in scientific research.

The recommended courses are:

Advanced Quantum Mechanics (FK5027)
Analytical Mechanics (FK7049)
Electrodynamics (FK7045)
Mathematical Methods in Physics (FK7048)
Statistical Physics (FK7058)

Other courses are chosen together with the supervisor.

The mandatory courses are:

Quantum Chemical Methods in Chemical Physics, FK40002, 15 credits or Surface and Liquid Physics FK40003, 10 credits. These courses are intended to fulfil the requirement of broad knowledge within the subject. The course plans are decided by the board of the Department of Physics.

Introduction to Doctoral Studies at the Department of Physics FK40005, 5 credits, a course giving an introduction to the Department of Physics and to doctoral studies. The course includes "Research ethics and proper scientific conduct", a seminar series intended to fulfil the requirement regarding ethics and conduct in scientific research.

The recommended courses are:

Quantum Chemistry (FK7059) or equivalent, 15 credits

Other courses are chosen together with the supervisor.

The mandatory courses are:

Complex topics in medical radiation physics FK40004, 10 credits intended to fulfil the requirement of broad knowledge within the subject. The course plan is decided by the board of the Department of Physics.

Introduction to Doctoral Studies at the Department of Physics FK40005, 5 credits, a course giving an introduction to the Department of Physics and to doctoral studies. The course includes "Research ethics and proper scientific conduct", a seminar series intended to fulfil the requirement regarding ethics and conduct in scientific research.

The Medical Radiation Physics research division of the department decides which are the recommended courses.

Other courses are chosen together with the supervisor.

Please note: Courses completed before admission to the doctoral studies can be included in the PhD only if they are not included in the courses used to meet the qualification criteria for doctoral studies. (at a maximum 22,5 credits can be included from courses taken before admission as a PhD student)

Also note that all courses that should be counted in the PhD must be reported via application i Ladok.
