Incoming exchange students

The Department of Physics is a very international department, where both staff and students come from all over the world. Our incoming exchange students are important to us, and we are happy to receive students from our partner universities from all over the world.

At Stockholm University we have two types of exchange agreements: departmental and university‑wide. Under both types of agreements you may study at our department. All of our courses offered in English require a background in mathematics and physics, so please check that you meet the eligibility requirements before applying for an exchange at our department.

In order to pursue exchange studies with us, you must be enrolled at one of our partner universities. Please check with your home university to see whether they have an agreement with Stockholm University.

How to apply as an exchange student

Once you have been nominated by your home university, you will receive information on how to apply for an exchange with us. If you are coming on a departmental exchange agreement with the Department of Physics, the following deadlines apply:

  • Students starting in the autumn semester need to be nominated by 1 April and apply by 15 April.
  • Students starting in the spring semester need to be nominated by 20 September and apply by 1 October.

If you are coming on a university‑wide agreement the deadlines may be different.

At the Department of Physics you can find a wide selection of courses taught in English. This includes all courses at the advanced level, as well as the third-year courses in our Bachelor programme.

If you are coming on a departmental agreement with the Department of Physics, at least half of your courses must be in physics.

Please note that some courses are not offered every year. You may choose from any English‑taught course for which you meet the entry requirements. Course placement cannot be guaranteed. If a course is cancelled or you do not meet the requirements, our international coordinator will contact you. Stockholm University is not responsible for cancelled courses or for students being unable to enroll due to full classes or unmet academic requirements.

If you are coming on a university-wide agreement, you are free to apply for courses in any subject at Stockholm University, provided you meet the eligibility requirements.

How to select courses as an exchange student

As an exchange student you have the possibility to apply for student housing. Unfortunately we are not able to guarantee accommodation for all incoming students.

Housing Office

Stockholm University has two semesters per academic year: autumn and spring.
The autumn semester generally starts in the last week of August or the first week of September, and the spring semester begins at the end of January.

Term dates

Stockholm University offers an arrival service for incoming exchange students. The exact dates for this service are published well in advance of the semester start.

Arrival service and Welcome activities

Incoming exchange students admitted to courses in astronomy are usually invited to an introductory meeting during the week before the semester starts, or during the first week of classes. The date of the introductory meeting is coordinated with the arrival service to ensure that students who choose to use this service can attend. The invitation is sent after you have officially been accepted to the exchange (letter of acceptance).
